Constructivism
Connections to Teaching

Week 4

Constructivism Principles in Teaching

  • Knowledge is built upon previous knowledge.

  • Learning is not a passive absorption of information but an active process of constructing meaning as learners research, write, do, or practice. This underscores the integral role of educators in guiding and facilitating this process. Learning is an active process of doing (hands-on activities).

  • Learning is not a solitary activity but a social one. Peer involvement is not just beneficial but critical in the learning process. This highlights the value of collaboration and community in education. Learning is connected to our previous knowledge or beliefs about something by linking to our environments or daily experiences.

  • Learning and knowledge is personal. Each learner builds their learning by bringing their own experiences forward.

  • Learning involves engaging the mind. Learning needs to go beyond hands-on activities alone. The learner needs to engage the mind.

  • Motivation is crucial to learning. No motivation, no understanding or engagement.
